Bodnant Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK, spanning some 80 acres and is situated above the River Conwy on ground sloping towards the west and looking across the valley towards the Snowdonia range.

“Remember to include fragrance in your garden – especially along pathways and steps, and near places to sit and relax.”

Ned Lomax, Head Gardener Bodnant Garden

HELIO

Heliotropium ‘Dwarf Marine’

Heliotropium arborescens

Helioptropes are naturally found in dry and sandy habitats such as those in Mexico and South America. They are often cultivated for garden use as they bear sweetly scented tiny flowers which are formed in a dome or flattened flower head.

Heliotropium ‘Dwarf Marine’ is a compact cultivar with purple, fragrant flowers, suitable for growing in containers as well as at the front of ornamental borders. Its blooms are particularly attractive to butterflies.

For best results grow Heliotropium ‘Dwarf Marine’ in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Remove spent blooms to prolong flowering.

Night Phlox Midnight Candy

Night Phlox Midnight Candy

Zaluzianskya capensis

Growing night phlox is a great way to add evening fragrance to the night-blooming garden. Perhaps you have other night-blooming, fragrant blooms in a moon garden setting. If so, night phlox plants, also called Midnight Candy, are a good companion for other plants growing there.

This South African native is an heirloom plant, botanically called Zaluzianskya capensis. If you have already grown a moon garden in your home landscape, this annual phlox is easy to include. If you’re thinking of starting an evening fragrance garden, night-blooming phlox can have its own spot or be paired with other fragrant plants.  Night phlox bloom in shades of white, purple, and even maroon. Night-blooming phlox offers a honey-almond, vanilla fragrance that combines well with the sweet scents of angel’s trumpets, the rich clove smell of dianthus, and the perfume-like jasmine scent of four o’clock plants.

Scottish nurseryman Henry Eckford (1823–1905) cross-bred and developed the sweet pea, turning it from a rather insignificant if sweetly scented flower into a floral sensation of the 19th century.

His initial success and recognition came while serving as head gardener for the Earl of Radnor, raising new cultivars of pelargoniums and dahlias. In 1870 he went to work for one Dr. Sankey of Sandywell near Gloucester. A member of the Royal Horticultural Society, he was awarded a First Class Certificate (the top award) in 1882 for introducing the sweet pea cultivar 'Bronze Prince', marking the start of association with the flower. In 1888 he set up his development and trial fields for sweet peas in Wem in Shropshire. By 1901, he had introduced a total of 115 of the 264 cultivars grown at the time. Eckford was presented with the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour for his work. He died in 1906, but his work was continued for a time by his son John Eckford.
