Plants General Assistant- Huntingdon Garden Centre
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week, including alternate weekend working
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
We are looking for an enthusiastic and customer-focused General Assistant to support our Plant Area.
You will help maintain high standards throughout the department, ensuring plants are well cared for, displays are attractive and fully stocked, and customers receive excellent service and advice. This is a hands-on role working across both outdoor seasonal bedding, hardy and indoor plants, supporting the team in delivering a welcoming and inspiring shopping experience.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Deliver excellent customer service at all times.
- Assist customers with plant selection and provide basic gardening and plant care advice.
- Support customers with carrying purchases to their vehicles when required.
- Maintain a friendly, helpful, and professional approach with all customers.
Plant Care & Stock Maintenance
- Water, care for, and maintain the health and presentation of seasonal bedding and indoor plants.
- Assist with receiving, unpacking, and displaying deliveries.
- Replenish stock and ensure products are available and presented attractively.
- Support stock rotation to maintain quality and freshness.
- Remove damaged or poor-quality stock as required.
Merchandising & Presentation
- Help create and maintain attractive seasonal displays.
- Ensure pricing and point-of-sale materials are accurate and clearly displayed.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, housekeeping, and presentation throughout the department.
- Support promotional and seasonal changeovers.
Team Support
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve department goals.
- Assist with daily tasks and operational requirements as directed by supervisors.
- Support new team members and contribute to a positive working environment.
Operational Duties
- Follow company policies, procedures, and health and safety guidelines.
- Operate EPOS and till systems accurately when required.
- Assist with stock counts and inventory checks.
- Report any maintenance, safety, or plant health concerns to management.
About You
- An interest in gardening, plants, or horticulture.
- Previous retail or customer service experience is desirable but not essential.
- Friendly and approachable with excellent communication skills.
- Reliable, hardworking, and willing to learn.
- Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Physically able to undertake manual handling and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Flexible and willing to work alternate weekends and peak seasonal periods.
