Position: Plant Manager

Location: Matlock Garden Centre, part of the Blue Diamond Group.

Hours: Full-time hours, including alternate weekend working.

Salary: Competitive, depending on experience.

The Role
This is a dynamic, hands-on role with a dual focus on horticulture and retail management. You will have overall responsibility for the commercial and operational performance of the plant department, from planning and purchasing stock to creating stunning seasonal displays.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Team Leadership: Lead, train, and motivate our plant area staff to ensure the highest standards of plant care and customer service.
  • Stock Management: Take full ownership of stock control, including seasonal purchasing, stock rotation, and wastage management to meet sales targets.
  • Commercial Performance: Maximise sales and profitability through effective merchandising, display creation, and promotional activities.
  • Horticultural Care: Ensure the health and quality of all plants through proper watering, pruning, and pest and disease control.
  • Customer Experience: Act as a go-to expert for customers, providing specialist advice and fostering a welcoming and engaging shopping experience.
  • Health and Safety: Maintain a safe and tidy environment for both staff and customers, ensuring compliance with all company policies.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experienced Retail Manager: You have a proven track record in a retail management role, ideally within a garden centre or plant-focused environment.
  • Horticultural Expert: You possess in-depth knowledge of hardy and seasonal plants, their care requirements, and seasonal trends.
  • Commercial Mindset: You are commercially astute, with strong business management, budgeting, and analytical skills to drive sales growth.
  • Inspirational Leader: You can motivate and empower a team to achieve shared goals and deliver exceptional results.
  • Excellent Communicator: You can build rapport with customers and suppliers and communicate effectively with your team.
  • Proactive and Creative: You can think on your feet, solve problems, and create inspirational, visually appealing displays that delight our customers.
