Keeping Feeders and Bird Baths Clean

Maintaining good hygiene for bird feeders is essential. Each time you refill them, remove any leftover debris. Once a week give them a thorough clean using a mild disinfectant. To prevent droppings from accumulating underneath, relocate the feeders to a different spot after every clean. Bird baths should be emptied and rinsed daily, then topped up with fresh tap water.

Once a week, disinfect them and let them dry completely before refilling with fresh tap water.

Adjust how much food you provide depending on how quickly it’s being eaten. Ideally, food should be consumed within a day or two, so avoid leaving uneaten food sitting in the feeder for long periods. When topping up, always discard any old food first.

If you notice an unwell bird using your feeders, stop feeding immediately. Clean the feeders thoroughly and store them away from the garden, such as in a shed or garage. Wait 2-4 weeks before putting them back out, and if you spot another sick bird, repeat the process.

Wear gloves when cleaning feeders and bird baths, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, and use separate cleaning tools outdoors.
